The I.M.A.G.IN.E® Journey is for those who wish to accelerate developmental gain for their children in minimal time. Children with developmental delays are seriously disadvantaged where instructional methods limit their learning opportunities. I.M.A.G.IN.E® is wholly based on the individual needs of the child, and empowers the child through establishing learning independence and enhancing their own unique capacity to learn – and to teach us what works best.
Labels are limiting. A diagnosis of autism changed my family’s life forever, but change is what my son resisted most. The rigidity he displayed was paralysing for our entire family. By the time my youngest son, Julian, was two, I knew he was not developing normally. Finding out the exact nature of the problem was extremely demoralising, and I wasted a lot of valuable time asking, “What is wrong?”.
I was subjected to “professional” opinions like: “He is not speaking because you interpret everything he means, and then do it, so he doesn’t have to learn to speak”! Instead of being applauded for finding a way to communicate with my non-verbal child, I was blamed for my child’s developmental delay. This is just one example of the kind of non-constructive experiences I encountered from the diagnostic community.
I changed my mind set. I started asking, “What is right?” That’s where our journey began. I eventually focused on what Julian needed most – to develop skills that would allow him to play, dress himself, feed himself, communicate with us, and be able to have all the skills he needed to start school, just like any other child of his age. I started with what he could do. He could see. He could hear. He could touch. With those three senses alone, the world could be opened to him in a way that wasn’t overwhelming, was meaningful, and enjoyable.
Julian is now a competent adult, who lives, loves, laughs, cries, works and plays, as we all do! What I wanted most for Julian is what any parent wants for their child: to experience joy in everyday life, to feel validated and acknowledged, to achieve goals, and to participate constructively in community and family life.
Our family journey can now be your family journey – without any of the obstacles, setbacks, or false starts that we encountered, and with the full advantage of our hard-learned experience. The most significant factor in life success is developing learning independence.
Discovering “what works” for accelerating the learning of children with autism spectrum disorders has taken 20 years of research, and the experience of continuous trial and error, encompassing the contributions of all the children who made I.M.A.G.IN.E® possible. They have gone on to lead independent lives as competent adults, just like my son, Julian. The path to your child’s independence begins here.
